In experiments in rats with alloxan-induced diabetes comparative effect of a rhizome Curcuma longa powder and its main component - Curcumin on some parameters of carbohydrate metabolism (the sugar concentration in blood and glycogen content in a liver) have been studied. It has been shown, that intake of the turmeric rhizome powder caused hypoglycemic effect at the alloxan-induced diabetic rats throughout all periods of supervision while Curcumin intake had short-term effect only for one day. Possibly, observed hypoglycemic effect of Curcuma longa rhizme is due not only to presence of Curcumin in the plant, but also vitamins, macro-and microcells, and also biologically active substances possessing a wide spectrum of action.
