The results of the red blood cells studies in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are analyzed. One direction of research is related to the study of oxidative stress. The alteration in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, the levels of different forms of hemoglobin, including methemoglobin, products of lipid peroxidation are observed in erythrocytes of COPD patients. Another area concerns the study of physical and chemical parameters of red blood cells. The data about the change in the shape of erythrocytes, their electrophoretic mobility at COPD are discussed. At the same time there are certain differences in the direction of changes of biochemical parameters in erythrocytes of COPD patients. This is probably due to the fact that when doing research or the interpretation of the results clinical forms of COPD, the stage and severity were not taken in account. Further study of the metabolism and the physic – chemical properties of red blood cells will be perspective for understanding the mechanisms of COPD progression.
